The pier on the right was called “Pier for Patients”, and used only by the inmates. In contrast, the pier on the left was the “Pier for Staff”, and as it was used by staff and guests it served as the entrance to the island. From around 1975 the piers were used jointly by both inmates and staff, but since the construction of the Oku Nagashima Bridge in May 1988, they are not used often.
