Kamiyatei Pavilion was donated by KAMIYA Noburo, the husband of KAMIYA Mieko, the head psychiatrist at Nagashima Aiseien. He was a botanist at Tokyo University. This pavilion is built in the form of a mushroom. On the center pole you can see the poem “They cast a new light” written by Mieko. Rainwater is passed through the pole. From Kamiyatei Pavilion you can see all of Oku Komyoen, with Shodoshima Island in the distance.

KAMIYA Mieko is known for her writing about Hansen’s Disease patients, particularly about the daily lives of the patients and the lessons about the importance of life that can be drawn from their experiences.
